Born in Queensland, Australia, John Hillcoat is known for his visceral cinematic approach and deep understanding of human emotion which manifests throughout his filmmaking.

John’s work for brands such as Levi’s, Apple, Samsung, VW, Coca Cola, and Guinness have received every major advertising award. Last year alone his work for Guinness, Apple and Vaseline took home a Gold Lion for Film at the Cannes Lions Festival, a D&AD Graphite Pencil for Branded Content, placement in the 2016 APA Collection, Best Direction at the One Show, Clio and Epica Awards, AICP, ANDY, and ADC awards.

Critical acclaim further extends to John's feature film work - notably The Proposition (Guy Pearce), The Road (Charlize Theron), Lawless (Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, and Jessica Chastain), and Triple 9 (Kate Winslet, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, and Aaron Paul) for which he has been recognised with some of the film industries highest honours, including nominations for the Cannes Palm D’Or, the Venice Film Festival Golden Lion, and a BAFTA Film Award.

John has also directed music videos and collaborated on projects for such artists as Bob Dylan, Nick Cave, Einstürzende Neubauten, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, Muse, Robert Plant, the Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, and Massive Attack.

The video cuts together archive footage of Dylan on stage, as well as cryptic images – snakes in the bed, fake eyelashes in water, the moon, sex, death and destruction – that may hold the key to the great song’s secrets. Or maybe not.
